Production Process of Fused Magnesia

The production process of fused magnesia is short and simple, but it involves significant equipment investment and resource consumption. In China, the fused magnesia industry primarily uses electric arc furnaces to melt natural magnesite ore for production. However, the production technology and equipment are outdated, characterized by low power, small capacity, low efficiency, and a low degree of automation. This results in fused magnesia products of subpar quality, leading to low utilization of magnesium resources and severe environmental pollution.

Introduction to the Types and Properties of Magnesia

Sintered magnesia is a sintered block obtained by calcining natural magnesite ore (MgCO3) at high temperatures, which is then crushed and screened. Alternatively, it is a magnesium oxide raw material produced by fully sintering magnesium hydroxide derived from seawater or brine at temperatures between 1450-1900°C. Typically, sintered magnesia refers to the product obtained by calcining magnesite ore. Due to its high sintering temperature and excellent sintering degree, sintered magnesia is also known as dead-burned magnesia, distinguishing it from lightly burned magnesium oxide. It serves as a raw material for producing ordinary magnesia bricks and unshaped refractory materials.

How Are Magnesia Carbon Bricks Manufactured

Magnesia carbon bricks are produced by pressing a mixture of fused magnesia (sintered magnesia) and flake graphite (primarily fully crystalline graphite) with resin as a binder, followed by heat treatment. To enhance oxidation resistance, antioxidants such as metals are often added. When used at high temperatures, magnesia carbon bricks form a carbon skeleton bond. Since magnesia and carbon do not mutually dissolve, they retain the excellent refractory properties of the original components. Carbon has good thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient, and low elastic modulus, effectively preventing high-temperature spalling and slag penetration. Structural spalling is less likely to occur, significantly improving the critical weakness of structural spalling caused by slag penetration. Additionally, carbon is non-wetting to slag.

Introduction to Fused Magnesia

Fused magnesia is produced by melting high-quality magnesite. The English name for Dashiqiao refractory material is fused magnesite. It is produced by high-temperature calcination of magnesite, brucite, or magnesium hydroxide extracted from seawater. It is a general term for products derived from magnesite and other magnesium-based raw materials processed at high temperatures to achieve sintering. Magnesia produced by calcining natural magnesite in high-temperature equipment such as shaft kilns or rotary kilns using a single-step or two-step calcination process is called sintered magnesia. Magnesia formed by melting magnesite and other raw materials in an electric arc furnace until molten and then cooling is called fused magnesia. Magnesia extracted from seawater is called seawater magnesia.
